So what’s the deal with mother‘s day?
For most of us, Mothers’ Day is a time to sit back and take a moment to remember how much we love Mom. Sure, sometimes you may fight (a lot), but at the end of the day, she’s probably your biggest fan, and today is the day to recognize it. There are dozens – no, hundreds of ways to celebrate Mom’s awesomeness, many of which you can do without breaking the bank. While we all wish we could be buying Mom a car and a tropical vacation, such gestures aren’t realistic for most of the population.
The team here at BloomsyBox feels you, so we’ve compiled a list of wallet-friendly Mothers Day ideas. Don’t worry, Mom won’t think you’re being a cheapskate with these inventive concepts. Read on to find out how to make your Mom’s Mothers Day the greatest.
Step one - pick the right flowers
You can’t go wrong with beautiful blooms! The thing is, you want to pick the right arrangement. While we’re sure Mom will be happy with a number of flowers, picking the perfect bouquet for Mom’s personality shows that you went the extra mile. If Mom is the sweetest person you know…
Go with minicallas! Minicallas are adorable and lovely as can be. If your mother is the type of person who’s always going out of the way to help people, crack a grin, or bring a smile to your face, then minicallas are perfect for her. They come in a variety of colors, including white, purple, and hot pink. Check out our selection of whimsical minicallas
If Mom is spunky…
She needs something equally bold. Go for alstroemerias or sunflowers. Both of these blooms come in marvelous yellow colors, ideal for the woman who marches to the beat of her own drummer. Plus, alstroemerias are also the flower of friendship, signifying that you think of your mother as both a mom and a best friend. Check out our selection of gorgeous alstroemerias and sunflowers here
If Mom is elegant…
Orchids are the way to go. If Mom was the person who emphasized manners and making eye contact, she’ll love orchids. They’re refined and classy but also completely luxurious. Orchids are also a good fit if your mother enjoys the finer things in life but you aren’t exactly capable of buying her a diamond necklace. Check out our selection of affordable orchids here
Step two – create a card that has thought put into it
Yes, you could settle for a generic Mothers’ Day card, but why should you when it’s so easy to make a card that really shows you care? You don’t have to be a poet to express gratitude and love toward Mom. Here’s what to do.
Pick a memory, then find something that symbolizes that memory.
Pick a shared memory between you and Mom – we’re sure you have dozens of these stored up. This memory could be anything: a time when you and Mom went out to dinner, talked over the holidays. Maybe you’re thinking of a memory when Mom gave you some amazing career advice. Anything works, as long as it’s personal.
Once you have a memory in mind, find something that represents that memory. It could be as literal as a photograph or as symbolic as a little hand-drawn doodle. Maybe it’s a sock, who knows? Your only limitation is that your object should be fairly small (compact enough to fit taped to a card)
Get out some nice cardstock paper, and write Mom a greeting.
Wish Mom a happy Mothers Day, and talk about how much this particular memory meant for you. You don’t have to go on gushing for multiple paragraphs. Instead, talk about the memory in one or two sentences. It can be as simple as “remember time we did X? That was a great day.” Remember to end the greeting with Love, [YOUR NAME].
Attach your symbolic object to the card.
Whether it’s a doodle, a sock, or a photo, make sure your symbolic object is attached to the card. It will bring the whole card together.
Bonus: clip in a photo of the two of you.
If you want to take it one step further, clip in an extra photo of both you and Mom to bring an extra smile to her face.
Step three – create the perfect brunch
Treating Mom to brunch on Mothers’ Day is one of the easiest ways to show you care. It’s also a gift for you, too! Who doesn’t love poached eggs and mimosas? If you want to take Mom out to a restaurant, feel free. However, making Mom breakfast in bed is a really great gesture. Here’s how to do it right.
The Dish: Avocado Toast With Poached Eggs
What you’ll need:
- 2 Slices sourdough toast
- 2 Eggs
- 1 Avocado
- Kosher Salt
- Chili Flakes
- Olive Oil
- White vinegar
- Serves 1 (can be easily doubled/tripled)
This is a simple dish that will make both you and Mom feel like you’ve gone to a fancy restaurant. If Mom doesn’t like spice, omit the chili flakes.
- Heat olive oil over a medium skillet (or frying pan). Make sure the oil is covering the surface area of the pan. Turn the pan to medium heat.
- Put the toast slices in the pan. Make sure the oil isn’t sputtering all over the place. If it is, turn the heat down.
- Fry the bread until it’s crispy on either side. Use a spatula to flip the bread over. This should take no more than 5 minutes.
- After you’ve plated your bread, create the avocado mash. This should be one avocado, a pinch of salt, a tiny bit of oil, and some chili flakes. Mash thoroughly, then scoop onto bread.
- Next, bring a pot of water to a medium heat over your stop. Add 1 teaspoon kosher salt, and 2 teaspoons white vinegar. Stir with the pointy end of a wooden spoon to create a whirlpool.
- Crack two eggs into the water then cover for five minutes. Watch the pot: if you see water start to boil over remove the cover, but do wait until the five minutes are up until you turn the heat off.
- Scoop out each of the eggs with a spoon or a spatula, then put on top of the avocado toast. Sprinkle salt on top, and voila, you have an incredible dish!
Bonus tip: You can top this dish with a number of sauces depending on your mom’s taste preferences. Try sriracha, ketchup, mustard, or truffle oil. The choice is yours!
The Drink: French 75
Mimosas are all fine and well, but why not make Mom a drink she’ll really remember? Introducing the French 75! This cocktail is sweet, fizzy, and easy to make at home. While the French 75 is typically made with gin and Champagne, feel free to substitute gin with vodka and Champagne with any sparkling wine, including Cava, Prosecco, or sparkling moscato.
